The Filmmaker

Born in Haiti, Karm-Syndia grew up in an artistic oriented family. When she moved to the US at the age of 16, she welcomed the opportunity to develop her skills in dance and acting. On the set of her first acting role in a feature film “No Vacancy” by Patrick Jerome, she discovered her love for directing.

Her first 2 short films “Her Magic” and “Steps to Your Heart” got accepted at the Boston International Film Festival. The latter got her an Honorary Awards from the One Reeler Film Festival. Since then, She has moved on to feature films and directed “Tentation Mortelle” and ” A Heart on The Mend”.

Today, Karm-Syndia Owns a production company, Karm-Syndia Entertainment, and Co-owns another film company, CinéLions, with collaborator and friend Brunir Olivier Shackleton.

Karm-Syndia holds a BA in Communication with a minor in Dance from Pine Manor College and a ALM in Digital Media Design from Harvard University.

 

 

The Actress

Movies always had a special meaning for Karm-Syndia who spent hours as a kid watching stories unfold. Dreaming about worlds that were different from her own. She had a taste for acting from the plays that her mom would put together for the community and the ones from her school, College St Francois d’Assise. 

It wasn’t until she moved to the states that she finally booked her first film, No Vacancy. However, it was the beginning. Karm-Syndia went on to lead on the first Haitian movie fully in kreyol to be streamed on Amazon Prime, Enpresyon. This film was also the first Haitian movie to be shown in an American cinema, The Showcase Cinema, for an entire week.

As of today, Karm-Syndia has gathered a few roles in short and feature films. She has been featured in commercials, hosted her own TV show ” Soiree Musicale with Karm” as well as red carpet events.

The Dancer

“After dinner, we would have a dance party where adults and children partake in the konpa groove”- Karm-Syndia

  • Dance has always played a major role in Karm-Syndia’s world. Her grandmother was a professional dancer who performed Menwat, Haitian traditional ensemble dance style. At an early age, she took dance classes in Haitian folklore and later on learned Jazz and Contemporary at Ecole de Danse Joelle Donatien Belot.
  • In College, Karm-Syndia pursued her dance studies in ballet and modern dance. In 2011, while she was still a college student, Karm-Syndia opened her own dance studio in Hyde Park, MA “Karm-Syndia Dance studio” know as KS Dance Studio. In 2021, she opened a second location in Taunton , MA.

KS Dance Studio students have performed in several music videos, and on world stages such as the Haiti Movie Awards and the Boston TD Garden.

Giving back means a great deal to Karm-Sydia who grew up watching her grandparents give back to their community. Whether it’s her grandmother teaching women to read and sew or her grandfather helping raise the children of those less fortunate. Karm-Syndia had a big dream which was to contribute to the wealth fare of Haiti 

  • Espwa DemenEspwa Demen (Tomorrow’s Hope) is a non-profit organization founded by Karm-Syndia. Their main mission is to help the children of Sudre (Kasid) Haiti by providing secure pathways to a better tomorrow through education, health and nutrition programs.
  • TERC Karm-Syndia serves ont he board of Terc which aims to help Haitian students and professionals to advance knowledge and solve the nation’s biggest challenges by connecting them with researchers, universities, companies, and other partners across the United States.
  • Epecare Also on the board of Epecare, Karm-Syndia strongly believe in their mission to provide multi-disciplinary training to resource limited communities globally. Epecare support the creation of emergency preparedness infrastructures and build sustainable networks of resources. EPECARE proactively prepares the next generation of first responders.
